In June we had the opportunity of attending a local Sidewalk Chalk Festival. It was fantastic and so much fun for our family. Not only did we get to walk around and watch amazing artists (both amateur and professional) draw different pieces of artwork, but we also got to do a few chalk drawings of our own. Later on the girls and I decided to do our own "Sidewalk Chalk Festival" and had a blast. Then we found an awesome book called "Chalk" that we read together to go with our Chalk Art Fun!

Our Very Own Sidewalk Chalk Festival
All you need is a little chalk. We found that Crayola's chalk was much easier to draw with producing brighter colors.

Now I promise, drawing with chalk on sidewalk is a little trickier than you would think. It made me appreciate even more the amazing chalk drawings we saw at the Sidewalk Chalk Festival. To me it looked like they were possibly using chalk pastels to do their drawings.

The girls beginning their drawings. We looked through a few books to give us inspiration with what we wanted to draw. Since we are in an apartment this summer, the size of our "Sidewalk Festival" was small, but still so much fun!

Little Red decided to draw a little girl riding in a carriage pulled by a horse. Not to bad for four years old!
Little Red's second drawing was a girl and boy getting married. She is in to anything that is fancy, beautiful, or princess inspired.

This is the awesome wordless picture book called, Chalk, by Bill Thomson. Another book I am going to need to add to our children's book library. It is so imaginative and I love the illustrations. My girls wanted me to read the book over and over. And then they read the book over and over themselves. 
The book starts off with a group of little kids going to the park during a rain storm. As they approach the park they see a curious bag hanging from a dinosaur ride. They open the bag and find it is filled with sidewalk chalk. 
So, one by one they begin to draw chalk drawings on the pavement. 
Then something magical happens. The drawings come to life. However, you will never guess what happens. The story line is darling, and I promise I won't ruin the ending for you. But, you definitely need to check it out at the library or purchase it and see what happens! So cute!

Well, have you been inspired? Are you going to do your own "Sidewalk Chalk Festival" at home. It makes for a great family activity, a fun play date, or a great birthday party or neighborhood event. The possibilities are endless, even if you do get a little messy in the process.
